Background
2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-sulfonic acid (Sulisobenzone) is a UV-absorbing agent used in commercially available sunscreens. Sulisobenzone is one of three benzophenones approved for use in sunscreens in the United States and was the first to achieve significant usage. The benzophenones are a group of UV-absorbing diphenylketones originally utilized as a coating for materials in industry to protect from discoloration. Twelve benzophenones are used in this country and are designated as benzophenones 1 through 12.
