Achtergrond
4-Phenylenediamine
base (parafenyleendiamine, PPD) wordt veel gebruikt als kleurstof in
haarverf. Het is een frequente oorzaak van kapperseczeem, door het
aanbrengen van kleurspoelingen. Het wordt ook gebruikt bij het verven van
bont. 4-Phenylenediamine is een organische grondstof, afgeleid van aniline.
Het wordt ook gebruikt bij het maken van polymeren en composieten en is een
precursor van aramide plastics en vezels zoals Kevlar en
Twaron.
4-Phenylenediamine wordt veel gebruikt in haarverven. De kleurloze grondstof
gaat na oxydatie over in de kleurstof. Bij contactallergie voor
p-phenylenediamine is er vaak ook allergie voor verwante kleurstoffen uit
dezelfde groep (de parakleurstoffen). Tot deze groep behoren onder andere
p-aminophenol, m-aminophenol, nitro-p-phenylenediamine,
n-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (para-aminodiphenylamine), en
toluene-2,5-diamine (sulfate). P-phenylenediamine en aanverwante stoffen
kunnen daarnaast ook in zwart rubber aanwezig zijn als anti-oxidans en
vulcanisatieversneller en in plastic als anti-oxidans. Een verwante stof
(CD-4) wordt gebruikt in het ontwikkelingsproces van kleurenfilms. PPD wordt
ook gebruikt in Henna tatouages (dark Henna).
