Background

a-Methylene-g-butyrolactone (Tulipalin A) is released from a glucoside precursor known as tuliposide A. It is the allergen in the Liliaceae and Alstroemeriaceae family of plants.
Dermatitis is a common occupational hazard of tulip bulb handlers. It characteristically affects the distal end of the thumb and forefingers. This painful, dry fissured hyperkeratotic dermatitis is known as tulip fingers.
