Background
Geraniol is a terpene alcohol that forms the chief part of oil of rose
and oil of palmarosa. It is an alcoholic extract obtained from geranium
oil. It has a pleasant, sweet, rose-like odor. Most geraniol on the market
today is synthetic made by pinene chemistry. Geraniol is a widely used
fragrance in soaps, detergents, and cosmetics. It is also a component of
natural flavors and essential oils used in flavor compounds. It is found
in over 250 essential oils including cintronella and lemon grass. It accounts
for over 90% of palmarosa oil and a large portion of geranium and rose
oils.
