Achtergrond
Chroom is een staalgrijs glanzend metaal datgebruikt wordt voor het verchromen van staal en voor het maken van chroom-staal of chrome-nikkel-staal legeringen. Het verbetert de hardheid en roestbestendigheid van metaalverbindingen. Het is in omvang het vierde metaal op aarde en een belangrijke oorzaak van (beroeps-gebonden) contact-eczeem, vooral bij mannen. Het wordt ook gebruikt om chroomzuur te maken waarmee glas wordt gereinigd en waarmee materialen kunnen worden geëtst. Het is een ingrediënt van cement, het vertraagt het uitharden en verbetert de de dichtheid en structuur. Via contact met cement en beton veroorzaakt chroom handeczeem bij bouwvakkers. Het wordt ook gebruikt in de foto-industrie als oxyderende stof. Het wordt gebruikt bij het looien van leer.
