Background

Propolis is a resinous substance found in bee hives containing flavonoid aglycones. Propolis is collected by bees from poplar buds. The main allergen is 1,1-dimethylallyl caffeic acid ester (LB-1). Bee keepers are classically affected by dermatitis, although propolis has been used by manufacturers of stringed instruments. The oral ingestion of propolis has caused cheilitis and perioral dermatitis.
Caffeic acid is isolated from propolis. The residue from the alcohol extraction is called propolis resin, yielding propolis balsam on extraction with hot petroleum ether. Propolis balsam has a hyacinth odor and is said to contain 10% cinnamyl alcohol.
