Background

Styrax is an ingredient of compound benzoin tincture.The balsam obtained from tree trunks of Liquidambar orientalis is known as Levant Storax or L. styraciflua known as American Storax containing cinnamates and styrene used in perfumery. Levant Storax is native to Asia Minor. American Storax is produced chiefly in Honduras. It contains 33 to 50% a- and b-storesin and its cinnamic ester, 5 to 10% styracin, 10% phenylpropyl cinnamate, small amount of ethyl cinnamate, benzyl cinnamate, 5 to 15% free cinnamic acid, styrene, 0.4% levorotatory oil, and traces of vanillin.
