ARNOLD-CHIARI SYNDROOM / MALFORMATIE home ICD10: Q07.0

Arnold-Chiari syndroom (Arnold-Chiari malformatie, Chiari malformation) is een verzamelnaam voor een groep afwijkingen van de achterste schedelgroeve (posterior fossa) en de hersenstructuren die daar in gelegen zijn (cerebellum, pons, en medulla oblongata). Er zijn verschillende varianten, en de meest gevonden en minst ernstige is Chiari I, waarbij een of beide aanhangsels (tonsillen) van het cerebellum uitzakken tot in het foramen magnum. Er kunnen uiteenlopende intracraniële of extracraniële defecten bij aanwezig zijn (hydrocephalus, syrinx, encephalocele, spinal dysraphism) die neurologische klachten kunnen veroorzaken.

En er zijn huidafwijkingen beschreven die er mogelijk mee geassocieerd zijn, waaronder cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita, teleangiëctasieën, Leopard syndroom (multiple lentigines), blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome, giant congenital melanocytic nevi, phakomatosis pigmentovascularis type II, acanthosis nigricans, neurofibromatosis type I, focale dermale hypoplasie, en Waardenburg syndroom. Het gaat om zeldzame case-reports en het is niet altijd te zeggen of het een toevallige samenloop van klachten betreft, of een echt syndroom.
